Si le Monday Blues Band occupe une place bien à lui sur la scène musicale libanaise, c’est notamment parce qu’il regroupe en un ensemble cohérent, aussi bien des amateurs avertis , exerçant des professions libérales et jouant strictement pour le plaisir, que des musiciens de carrière hautement qualifiés et appréciés.

Pourquoi donc ce Lundi ( Monday ) désigne-t-il un groupe pouvant parfaitement se produire n’importe quel soir de la semaine? Parce que c’est tous les lundis qu’ il y a plus d’un quart de siècle, ses membres fondateurs , passionnés de blues , rock et soul jouant d’instruments divers , avaient pris l’habitude de se retrouver chez un des leurs , Pierre Issa , pour s’adonner à leur hobby.

C’est seulement quand une machine bien rodée naquit de ces folles jam-sessions des premiers temps, que le Monday Blues Band, auquel se joignaient fréquemment des artistes de carrière, se lança dans des performances publiques. Il n’a cessé, depuis, d’être sollicité par les clubs les plus prestigieux du Liban, multipliant par ailleurs les concerts au bénéfice d’associations humanitaires, notamment au Casino du Liban. Le MBB est un habitué des festivals internationaux de jazz organisés dans le centre-ville de Beyrouth. Il a joué en ouverture pour John McLaughlin et a eu l’opportunité de rejoindre sur scène des célébrités de passage telles que Lucky Peterson, Otis Grand, Nigel Kennedy, Larry Corryell, Stanley Jordan, Deborah Coleman et Kenny Neal.

Dans sa facture actuelle, et tel qu’il se produira dans le cadre du prestigieux festival de Beiteddine , le MBB est formé de
+ Kamal Badaro (leader, compositeur, guitare, claviers, vocaux). Homme d’affaires bien connu sur la place, ce grand admirateur d’Eric Clapton , Albert King et Albert Collins a entamé dès l’âge de cinq ans des cours de piano classique , puis de solfège au Conservatoire national , avant de se mettre , adolescent , à la guitare , qu’ il a apprise d’oreille.
+ Fouad Goraieb (guitare, vocaux). C’est d’oreille aussi, et sans aucune aide, que cet ingénieur de télécoms, fondateur et dirigeant d’une firme de logiciels de téléphonie, apprend, dès son plus jeune âge, à jouer de la guitare. Outre sa flamme pour le blues , la soul , la pop et le folk , le matheux du groupe se plaît aussi à caresser les pinceaux , juste pour le plaisir.
+ Issa Goraieb (saxophone ténor). Ancien rédacteur en chef et actuel éditorialiste du quotidien beyrouthin L’Orient-le Jour, il a eu pour premier amour de jeunesse la guitare, apprise d’oreille pour ne pas changer. C’est plus tard qu’il est séduit par le saxophone, amicalement guidé par le musicien américain et libanais d’adoption Tom Hornig, qui joue fréquemment avec le MBB.
+ Ghassan Sakr (batterie). Autodidacte, il se perfectionne en jazz et latino au Musicians Institute de Londres. Ce virtuose de la percussion accompagne actuellement divers groupes, dont le MBB ; il se produit aussi bien à l’étranger qu’au Liban, et a joué à l’Opéra du Caire, à l’Olympia de Paris et dans les théâtres MGM et Fox aux Etats Unis.
+ Omar Harb (guitare basse). A peine sorti de l’enfance, il apprend la guitare et la guitare basse avant de rejoindre, a 20 ans, le Berkeley College de Boston où il obtient un diplôme de composition et de productions musicales. Fondateur et propriétaire du studio et maison de production Nexttone, sis à Damas , Omar a accompagné de nombreux artistes locaux et internationaux ; il joue dans la formation animant le programme télévisé à succès The Voice et il est ingénieur en mastérisation auprès des studios JMR.
+Victor Kabbabé (vocaux). Pharmacien de formation, ce doux colosse né d’un père cubain et d’une mère libanaise et parlant non moins de six langues a commencé à chanter dès l’age de 10 ans. Outre le Liban, il est monté sur scène dans des pays aussi divers que l’ Australie, l’ Espagne, la Grèce, l’Allemagne et l’Egypte, côtoyant Ray Charles à Berlin ou encore Rita Pavone, Lulu, Catarina Valente et The Kinks.
+Scarlet Mounzer (vocaux). La benjamine du groupe a fait ses débuts aux claviers et au chant au sein d’un groupe local avant même d’avoir décroché son diplôme de design graphique et de marketing. Intégrée à la formation de jazz du Conservatoire national, elle a également fait entendre sa voix passionnément soul en France, en Belgique et à Chypre.

Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1989, Omar Rahbany comes from a rich musical lineage, as part of the third generation of the iconic Rahbani family.

Omar developed a fondness for the German concept of ‘Gesamtkunstwerk’ (meaning a total work of art), an idea that only stimulated his burgeoning creativity. At the age of nineteen he wrote and composed his first musical.

To enhance his experience in the realm of music, Omar moved to Barcelona where he studied with conductor Jordi Mora and later to Munich to study with Conductor and musicologist Christopher Schlüren. His most recent project is PASSPORT, a worldly musical album, on which he is the creator and producer. Passport was launched in the Middle East in Beirut, Lebanon (2016) and in the UK, for its international debut, at the Royal Court Theatre (2017).

The Qayssar promises his Beiteddine public, a grand 20 years celebration of his exceptional talent as a poet, a composer and a singer. He will be accompanied on the piano by Michel Fadel and the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra.

Abdel Rahman El Bacha

Born in Beirut into a family of musicians, Abdel Rahman El Bacha began studying piano in 1967 with Zvart Sarkissian, a student of Marguerite Long and Jacques Février. At 10, he gives his first concert with orchestra. In 1973, Claudio Arrau predicted a great career and in 1974, France, the Soviet Union and England offered him a scholarship. He chooses France by cultural affinity and enters the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, in the class of Pierre Sancan, where he gets four First Prizes (piano, chamber music, harmony and counterpoint).

Since the brilliant revelation of his talent at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium at the age of 19 that he won unanimously, he has performed in the most prestigious concert halls in Europe and all around the world.

From the Salzburg Mozarteum to the Théâtre des ChampsElysées in Paris, from the Amsterdam Concertgebouw to the Herkulessaal in Munich, he plays with prestigious ensembles such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre National de Belgique, the Gulbenkian Orchestra Lisbon, the NHK Tokyo, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande … under the baton of important conductors. He has recently appeared at the Philharmonie de Paris, at La Cité de la Musique in Paris, at the Grand Théâtre de Provence, in the United States with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, at the Salle Bourgie in Montreal, at the Musashino Hall in Tokyo…

In 2011, he began collaborating with Mirare CD label by recording some Prokofiev’s solo piano works followed in 2013 by a new Beethoven’s Complete 32 Piano Sonatas warmly acclaimed by the international critic. In 2018 has been released, still for Mirare, the recording of his own compositions for solo piano, works now edited by Éditions Delatour.

Billy Eidi

Billy Eidi, a student in Beirut of Zafer Dabaghi then Laila Aouad, studied in Paris under Magda Tagliaferro, Jacques Coulaud and Jean Micault. He is currently a professor at the CRR in Paris and the Schola cantorum. Previously he taught at the Cnsm (Lyon) and the École Normale in Paris. He gives regular master-classes at the International Summer Academies in Nice and Nancy, as well as in Spain, China, Japan and South Korea.

Billy Eidi mainly champions the romantic repertoire music, and 20th century french repertoire. He gives with the composer and writer Guy Sacre lecture-recitals on literary and musical themes.
For his recordings of works for piano (Sauguet, Milhaud,
Poulenc, Satie, Scriabin, Séverac Hahn, Fauré and Sacre) and French song (Ravel, Debussy, Fauré, Roussel, Poulenc, Sacre, Honegger, Auric, Delage, Chausson) Billy Eidi has been awarded high distinctions, amongst which are the Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros, the Nouvelle Académie du Disque Français, the BBC “Music Choice”… He was awarded le “Grand Prix ‘Gerald Moore’”, by the french “Académie du disque lyrique” after a new release of Sacre’s songs.
His most recent recording (Fauré’s 13 Barcarolles) has just been awarded “Choc de l’année” by the French CD magazine “Classica”.

New York City, 1923. An ageing Gibran narrates from his cold studio. Through poetry and music, he transports us back two decades and across continents, to turn-of-thecentury Beirut. His eighteen-year-old self-returns to The Middle East after five years in America, to complete his studies and discover more of his heritage. He falls deeply in love with Selma, the daughter of family friend and respected businessman, Farris Karamy. However, Selma soon becomes betrothed to Mansour Bey Galib, nephew of the powerful Bishop Bulos Galib, who has one eye on the Karamy’s fortune. Gibran and Selma fight to reconcile their love for one another, whilst navigating the traditions and expectations that society lays before them.

Following a sellout run in London, and reuniting the original West End cast and creative team, this moving musical now brings Gibran’s story home to Lebanon. Broken Wings is written by Nadim Naaman and Dana Al Fardan, directed by Bronagh Lagan and produced by Ali Matar, with orchestrations by Joe Davison. What inspired the acclaimed author of The Prophet to write? What moved him to such profound philosophy in his later life? The events of Broken Wings highlight key issues of the time, yet the themes and debates raised remain increasingly relevant today, over a century later; the fight for gender equality, the freedom to love who we love, tradition versus modernity, wealth versus happiness, immigration and the importance of ‘home’.

Nadim Naaman

British-Lebanese Nadim Naaman was raised in London. He studied Theatre at The University of Warwick, before training in Musical Theatre at The Royal Academy of Music. He has performed extensively both in the UK and internationally, and is best known for playing Raoul in Cameron Macintosh’s West End production of The Phantom of The Opera. Other shows include On The Town, Sweeney Todd, The Sound of Music, Titanic, Chess and The Last Five Years. As a Concert Soloist, Nadim has performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras in venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall, The Southbank Centre, Gothenburg Concert Hall, The Amsterdam Concergebouw, Oslo Concert Hall, The Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Dublin’s National Concert Hall.

Dana Al Fardan

Dana is one of The Middle East’s leading contemporary female composers. Drawing on her cultural heritage, and influenced by a love of world music, her work is Arabinfluenced and contemporary-classical in style. A live performance of her album Sandstorm sold out London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2017, and she recently
composed the score for feature film The Necromancer. Appointed the official composer of Qatar Airways, Dana’s music welcomes millions of passengers on board upon departure and arrival. Through her support of music education programmes, nurturing creative talents of the next generation, she actively contributes to the development of the arts in The Middle East. She was voted Grazia Arabia’s Woman Of The Year in 2017.

Gérard Depardieu a été révélé en 1974 par le film Les Valseuses , de Bertrand Blier , il est depuis l’un des comédiens les plus actifs et l’acteur par excellence du cinéma français. Outre son métier d’acteur, il est producteur de cinéma et de théâtre, viticulteur, à ses heures. Il a par ailleurs réalisé des films dont Le Tartuffe de Molière en 1984.
Gérard Depardieu a tourné avec les plus grands cinéastes français comme François Truffaut et Maurice Pialat ainsi que dans des films hollywoodiens. Il figure dans plus de 200 films.
Vient plus tard la période des grands réalisateurs italiens : Bernardo Bertolucci l’engage dans sa fresque historique 1900, où il partage la vedette avec Robert De Niro, et Marco Ferreri le dirige dans Rêve de singe. Depardieu impressionne pour son aisance à changer d’univers. Il tourne en effet dans des films aussi différents que Le Camion (1977) de Marguerite Duras, Barocco (1977) d’André Téchiné, La Femme gauchère (1978) de Peter Handke.
Tout en restant fidèle à Bertrand Blier (Tenue de soirée, Trop belle pour toi), Depardieu élargit son répertoire auprès d’autres grands noms du cinéma d’auteur français, en refusant de s’enfermer dans un genre ou un personnage précis :

• Maurice Pialat le fait tourner dans quatre films, dont les très remarqués Police qui lui vaut un prix d’interprétation à la Mostra de Venise 1985 et Sous le Soleil de Satan, récompensé par la Palme d’or au Festival de Cannes 1987 ; • Alain Resnais lui confie le rôle de l’un des « cobayes » dans Mon oncle d’Amérique.
• François Truffaut lui propose à la même époque des rôles d’amoureux passionné : La Femme d’à côté, aux côtés de Fanny Ardant et auparavant Le Dernier Métro avec Catherine Deneuve, succès commercial qui lui vaut le César du meilleur acteur.
• En 1981, il est choisi par John Travolta pour être sa voix française dans Blow Out, réalisé par Brian De Palma.

On le retrouve également dans des films en costumes, où il incarne plusieurs personnages historiques ou issus de la littérature française :

Le Retour de Martin Guerre de Daniel Vigne (1982) ; Danton d’Andrzej Wajda (1982) ; Jean de Florette (1986) de Claude Berri ; Camille Claudel (1988) de Bruno Nuytten dans le rôle de Rodin, ; Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) de JeanPaul Rappeneau où son interprétation lui vaut un nouveau César, une Palme d’Or à Cannes et une nomination à l’Oscar du meilleur acteur ; Tous les matins du monde (1991) d’Alain Corneau ; 1492 : Christophe Colomb de Ridley Scott (1992);  Vatel (2000), de Roland Joffé.
Dans les années 1990, après notamment le succès de
Cyrano de Bergerac, le cinéma américain lui propose des premiers rôles comme dans Green Card de Peter Weir (1990). Sa prestation lui vaut le Golden Globe du meilleur acteur de comédie.
Depardieu multiplie également les succès publics dans des films à vocation populaire comme Astérix et Obélix contre César. Il interprète Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, Balzac et Les Misérables Plus récemment, dans le film Welcome to New York d’Abel Ferrara, il incarne à l’écran Dominique StraussKahn, l’ancien directeur général du FMI. Il vient d’avoir un grand succès en Sélection Officielle au Festival de Cannes avec The Valley of Love de Guillaume Nicloux aux côtés d’Isabelle Huppert.
D’autre part, il éprouve une immense admiration pour Saint Augustin. Il a rencontré le Pape Jean-Paul II lors du jubilé de l’an 2000 au moment même où l’évêque d’Hippone fut évoqué. Le Pape et le Cardinal Poupard lui ont alors suggéré de réaliser un film sur cet homme. Le 11 février 2003, Gérard Depardieu donne une première lecture publique des Confessions de Saint Augustin à la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris .
Gérard Depardieu est autant un passionné de littérature que de musique. Il a souvent collaboré avec Le Maestro Riccardo Muti ( Lélio de Berlioz et Ivan le Terrible de Prokofiev ) et participé en tant que récitant à des opéras, mis en scène par Jean-Paul Scarpitta, comme Hàry Jànos de Kodaly et Oedipus Rex de Strasvinsky ( texte Jean Cocteau ).

Barbara

Barbara, est née Monique Andrée Serf, le 9 juin 1930 à Paris. Au début des années 50, elle part pour la Belgique tenter sa chance. En 1960, elle enregistre « Barbara chante Brassens », et en 1965 elle publie son premier album « Barbara chante Barbara ». Qui reçoit le Prix de l’Académie Charles-Cros. En 1981 paraît « Seule »

En 1986, elle se produit au Metropolitan Opera de New York  Elle accompagne au piano son ami, le célèbre danseur, Mikaïl Barychnikov, qui danse sur deux de ses chansons « Pierre » et « Le Mal de Vivre ».
Dans les années 1990 ses concerts donnés au Théâtre du Châtelet à Paris font partie de sa légende. En 1994, elle obtient la Victoire de la Musique. Son dernier album « Barbara » est enregistré en1996. Le 24 Novembre 1997, Barbara meurt à l’âge de 67 ans. Depuis 2010, il existe un Prix qui récompense, chaque année, une chanteuse francophone.

A World Premiere with Gabriel Yared & Yasmina Joumblatt A unique encounter between the Oscar winner, composer and musician Gabriel Yared and the amazing Yasmina Joumblatt, great granddaughter of the legendary Asmahan. Yasmina’s immense talent as a songwriter and interpreter is enhanced by the music composed for her by Yared.

The Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra will be directed by Maestro Dirk Brossè.

Gabriel Yared

Oscar winning composer Gabriel Yared is one of the most well-respected composers in film. Yared won an Academy Award for his score to Anthony Minghella’s The English Patient, which also won him a BAFTA, Golden Globe and Grammy. Yared was originally known for his work in French cinema, starting with Jean-Luc Godard, and later Jean-Jacques Beineix. He also composed ballet music for works such as Clavigo for The Paris Opera, and Wayne McGregor’s Raven Girl for the Royal Opera Ballet. More recently, he scored Xavier Dolan’s sixth feature film, ‘It’s Only the End of the World’, which won the Grand Prix at Cannes in 2016. Yared was an official member of the Cannes Film Festival Jury, 2017.

In December 2017, Yared performed a concert of his film music at the Paris Philharmonie, alongside the London Symphony Orchestra. He recently finished scoring Dolan’s upcoming film, ‘The Death and Life of John F. Donovan’, ‘The Happy Prince’, directed by Rupert Everett, Michel Ocelot’s latest film, ‘Dilili à Paris’, and ‘Judy’, a Judy Garland biopic starring Renée Zellweger and directed by Rupert Gould. In 2016, Yared began to work with Yasmina Joumblatt, firstly adapting three songs composed by Farid El Atrache for his sister Asmahan, and progressively composed 9 original songs based on Yasmina’s lyrics.

Yasmina Joumblatt

For Yasmina Joumblatt, music is as much a new and special endeavor, as it is an instinct deeply rooted within herself and her heritage.

Innately curious since her early years, Yasmina has followed many different yet interconnected paths, all driven by an open and aspiring mind. From one inspiring encounter to another, the Lebanese artist has delved into various domains: from the study of law and political science, to the practice of psychology and homeopathy. While these encounters may be distinct, they naturally come together into a harmonious whole bringing new ways and  perspectives to nourish her intellectual curiosity.

After a lifetime of eclectic decisions and an eagerness to hone her own understanding, Yasmina Joumblatt’s journey has taken a new turn to music, marking her first reconnection with her profound, yet discreet, sensitivity.   While her debut as a singer and songwriter gives voice to a talent she had concealed during her youth, it also represents an artist’s search of her own roots, as she prepares for her first ever performance.  Through the strong bond she has with her unique legacy, she has brought to life the music and talent of her greatgrandmother, Asmahan, and her Arab heritage, bringing her deep emotional side into the light for the first time in her life.  The world-renowned composer Gabriel Yared recognized the value of this journey towards oneself and one’s deeply rooted origins. He decided to contribute to its revival by partnering with Yasmina. In her voice as much as in her lyrics, Yasmina Joumblat conveys a subtle combination of strength and gracefulness as she exposes her own vulnerability.

The Birth of a Voice

“I met Yasmina Joumblatt when I was living in London 15 years ago. She was very interested in reprising the songs sung by her great grandmother, Asmahan. At the time I was very busy scoring for films, and I wasn’t sure I was the right person to help, due to my lack of knowledge in oriental music. In any case, we started a great friendship together, seeing each other from time to time.

13 years later, I decided to record her singing the Asmahan song, Ya Habibi Taala, just on her own without any accompaniment. After hearing her voice, I was struck by how amazingly beautiful and unique it was, and so began to compose, orchestrate and adapt this original song to something completely different. Not only does Yasmina have the capability to sing so naturally and genuinely, she also has a talent for writing lyrics. So, I proposed that we collaborate and create original songs together. Over the last two years we have written 9 original songs, and have recreated 3 songs by Asmahan.

Yasmina’s voice is like a diamond, gifted from heaven. Everything about it is so touching and emotional, and its unique beauty draws you in. Through this encounter with Yasmina, I discovered a new-found relationship with my country, and also my country’s music, and so did she. I tried my very best to enhance all the qualities of her voice and lyrics with my composition, adaptation and orchestration. I put all my skills and my heart into these songs, as if I was building her a jewellery box for the gem of her voice inside.”

FLC plays a powerful and effective federating role in the Lebanese audiovisual industry. FLC supports the development of a competitive Lebanese film industry by professionalizing and structuring the sector.

FLC supports filmmakers, festivals and associations. It has supported more than 70 directors and more than 20 film projects. FLC has partnered with more than 50 international festivals and important cinematographic manifestations in Lebanon and abroad.
